The fossils of platypuses are not like the animal that exists today. They are monotremes, yes but many of them have teeth which modern platypuses do not. You should look at some of the fossils being found at Riversleigh in northwest Queensland. There is some remarkable stuff coming from the 20-30million year old fossil beds.
