HOW WOULD I CHANGE MY AVATAR TO A PICTURE OF A BAND?

Well, I want to put a picture of NIRVANA, OR GREEN DAY. Or maybe a unicorn, or platypus. But since technology hates me, and I just got a computer, I don't know how to do that so it would be nice if you could help. Thanks.
